What is RFID?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a wireless identification technology that uses radio waves to automatically identify and track objects equipped with RFID tags. An RFID system typically consists of RFID tags, RFID readers, antennas, and software.

Unlike traditional barcodes, RFID does not require direct line-of-sight scanning. Multiple tags can be read simultaneously, making RFID an efficient solution for inventory management, asset tracking, logistics, manufacturing, retail, healthcare, and access control.

How does RFID technology work?

RFID technology works by transmitting radio signals between an RFID reader and an RFID tag. When an RFID tag enters the reader's electromagnetic field, the tag sends back its stored data, such as a unique identification number or other encoded information.

The reader captures this data and transfers it to a computer or management system for processing. Depending on the application, RFID systems can automatically identify, locate, monitor, and manage thousands of tagged items with high accuracy.

What are the advantages of RFID over barcodes?

Compared with traditional barcode systems, RFID offers several important advantages:

What are the different types of RFID?

RFID systems are generally classified into three frequency ranges:

LF (Low Frequency, 125–134.2 kHz)

Suitable for access control, animal identification, and attendance systems. It offers a short reading distance but performs well around water and metal.

HF (High Frequency, 13.56 MHz)

Widely used for smart cards, library management, ticketing, cashless payment, and NFC applications. Typical reading distance is up to 10 cm.

UHF (Ultra High Frequency, 860–960 MHz)

Ideal for logistics, warehouse management, retail inventory, asset tracking, and industrial automation. Reading distance can reach over 10 meters under suitable conditions.


 

What is the difference between RFID and NFC?

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a subset of HF RFID technology.

The main differences include:

  • NFC operates at 13.56 MHz and supports two-way communication.
  • RFID includes LF, HF, and UHF technologies with different reading ranges.
  • NFC is commonly used for mobile payments, electronic business cards, and smartphone interactions.
  • UHF RFID is better suited for long-range identification and bulk reading applications.

Choosing between RFID and NFC depends on your application's communication range and functionality requirements.

 

What is the reading range of RFID tags?

The reading distance depends on several factors, including tag type, chip performance, antenna design, reader power, installation environment, and surrounding materials.

Typical reading ranges are:

  • LF RFID: up to 10 cm
  • HF RFID: up to 10 cm
  • NFC: 2–5 cm
  • UHF RFID: 1–15 meters or more, depending on the system configuration

For applications involving metal surfaces or liquids, specialized RFID tags are recommended to achieve optimal performance.

Are RFID tags waterproof?

Yes. Many RFID tags are designed for outdoor and industrial environments.

Depending on the housing material and manufacturing process, RFID tags can achieve protection ratings such as IP65, IP67, or IP68, making them resistant to water, dust, chemicals, and harsh weather conditions.

Waterproof RFID tags are commonly used in logistics, healthcare, laundry management, industrial manufacturing, and outdoor asset tracking.

Can RFID tags work on metal surfaces?

Standard RFID tags often experience reduced performance when attached directly to metal surfaces.

For these applications, anti-metal RFID tags or on-metal RFID tags are specifically designed to maintain reliable reading performance. They include a special shielding layer that minimizes signal interference caused by metal.

Anti-metal RFID tags are widely used for equipment management, IT asset tracking, industrial manufacturing, warehouse management, and tool identification.
